POSTHUMOUS MARRIAGE OR NECROGAMY IN FRANCE

Posthumous marriage or Necrogamy in France is legal but must be approved by several civil servants and the family of the deceased.Necrogamy, that is to say, marriage to someone who is deceased, is permitted in France.

It is regulated by Article 171 of the Civil Code of France which states: "The President of the Republic may, for serious reasons, authorize the solemnization of marriage if one of the spouses died after completion of official formalities marking it unequivocal consent.

It was especially common during and after World War I, when a posthumous marriage was necessary for women who wanted to assure the legitimacy of children whose fathers had died on the front before beings able to walk down the aisle.
